Positive Reinforcement Strategies
"Techniques used to encourage desired behaviors are often called positive reinforcement strategies. An example of such an approach would be offering rewards or incentives when the desired behavior is performed. It can be seen that this technique is significant in several spheres including education and behavior modification, as it is a means of causing the student to be motivated and is, therefore, a way of changing behavior in a lasting manner".
Some of the best examples of positive reinforcement strategies are verbal praise, tangible rewards, and privileges. An example of this is the way a teacher might give stickers to students who complete their assignments on time, while a parent can give extra screen time for appropriate behavior at home. The rewards show students that their achievements are essential and create a favorable environment for them to be more responsible in the future again.
Positive reinforcement is a process of rewarding a person for doing something that is desired by making an addition to the prize and thus increasing the frequency of its movement, whereas negative reinforcement means removing an undesirable stimulus to form a behavior that is more likely to occur. For instance, giving a child a treat for cleaning their room is an example of positive reinforcement, while the case of stopping nagging about chores when the child finally cleans his/her room is negative reinforcement.
Positive reinforcement requires instant rewards to be effective; therefore, the correct timing is the major factor. Immediate feedback makes the individual to understand very clearly the connection between the behavior and the reward. In the same way, if a dog hears the command to sit and then eats a treat immediately, he/she learns that sitting is the way to get good results.
Of course, the use of positive reinforcement in the workplace can be proven to be an effective means of increasing the morale and productivity of employees. Through the use of incentives such as cash, a public mention, or a day off for their achievements or behaving properly, employers can acknowledge and gratify their workforce. Such strategies not only motivate workers but they also build up a friendly and a positive working environment.
