Cross-Curricular Approaches
Cross-curricular strategies involve the use of different subjects to enrich the learning experience by showing knowledge interdependence. Through such an approach, students can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as they are allowed to use the principles from different fields in real-life situations.
Integrating multiple subjects in cross-curricular projects enhances the students' knowledge by demonstrating the interrelation of the disciplines. Like an art and science project where a student creates a model of the solar system, such a task allows students to study the scientific principles while using their creativity. This manner of learning can in turn lead to longer retention of knowledge, better engagement of the students, and a higher degree of transfer of knowledge to new situations.
Cross-curricular approaches are possible for teachers to implement by seeking for shared themes or projects that encompass more than one subject. For instance, a unit on ecosystems could cover biology (the study of organisms), geography (habitats), and art (representations). In addition, the planning of teachers from different subjects together could help the coherence and the alignment of objectives across the disciplines.
The difficulties that the use of cross-curricular methods is facing include the possible inconsistency in the curriculum standards of different subjects, the lack of time for planning and the need for teachers' professional development. Moreover, the evaluation can be complicated since the traditional methods may not appropriately assess interdisciplinary skills.
Integrated assessments and the constant collaboration of teachers can be considered as solutions.

One of the successful cross-curricular projects is the 'History Through Art' initiative, wherein the students study a historical period such as the Renaissance and create artworks inspired by the same. The project not only combines history, art, and critical thinking, but also allows students to manifest their imaginations and culture through the creative process. These kinds of projects, apart from fostering understanding, they also add up to the fun side of learning and make it more lasting.
