Background Knowledge Activation
Background knowledge activation denotes the act of recalling appropriate prior knowledge and experiences that will foster the understanding and learning of new information. Its functionality is a necessary element for productive learning since it helps learners to establish relationships between new concepts and previously acquired knowledge, which in turn leads to better retention and comprehension.
The background knowledge activation in learning facilitates the formation of connections between the new information and those that the learner already possesses in the form of cognition. The knowledge of the past that they have can be recognized by the pupils with respect to the present concepts and that way they will understand them better as well as keep them in mind for a long time. A good example of this can be a student trying to connect the new science topic he or she is learning with the previous lessons in biology or chemistry to grasp the material better.
A wide range of strategies is available for teachers to use in order to activate background knowledge, which might include brainstorming sessions, KWL charts (What I Know, What I Want to Know, What I Learned), and discussions that encourage students to communicate their prior experiences to the topic. As an illustration, prior to handling a unit about ecosystems, a teacher may ask students to share their experiences in nature, thus, activating the relevant background knowledge.

Certainly, prior information activation may be negative if it is erroneous or irrelevant, which may often lead to misconceptions. For example, a student who wrongly thinks about a historical event as they attend to a lesson on it would miss the accurate data altogether and hence the proper understanding of the subject. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the educators to help the students with a specific thought process that would lead them to the activation of an appropriate background knowledge.
